Introduction

Portland Gas Limited and the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI) have formalized a strategic partnership to drive sustainable energy adoption across Nigeria.

The collaboration combines Portland Gas’s operational energy infrastructure with NASENI’s federal technology mandate built on one shared conviction: Nigeria’s clean energy future can be built at home.

Who is NASENI?

NASENI is a federal agency under the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation, mandated to develop indigenous technology, build engineering infrastructure, and partner with the private sector to deploy innovation at scale across Nigeria.

What Was Agreed?

The partnership is structured around four key pillars:

CNG Infrastructure Development: Joint establishment of CNG Daughter Stations and Auto Conversion Centres nationwide.

Local Technology Deployment: Prioritizing domestic engineering solutions over imported alternatives.

Capacity Building: Training Nigerian technicians to install, maintain, and certify CNG systems.

Federal Alignment: Both organizations carry federal government backing, giving the partnership strong policy and institutional credibility.

The CNG Daughter Station and Auto Conversion Centre

The flagship output of the partnership is the NASENI-Portland CNG Daughter Station and Auto Conversion Centre; a facility offering:

(a) Affordable CNG refueling for converted vehicles

(b) Professional vehicle conversion from petrol/diesel to CNG

(c) Technical training for conversion technicians

(d) A live demonstration of Nigeria’s domestic clean energy capability

Why This Partnership Matters

Nigeria has abundant natural gas yet remains dependent on expensive imported petrol. This partnership directly addresses that gap by reducing import dependency, creating skilled jobs, delivering on the Federal Government’s Presidential CNG Initiative, and building a replicable infrastructure model that can scale nationally.

Conclusion

The NASENI-Portland Gas partnership is bold, federal-backed, and already delivering on the ground. As Nigeria’s energy transition accelerates, this is exactly the kind of collaboration that will define its pace and scale.
